Lexelle-sponsored Tarran Mackenzie picked up his first win since joining the the McCAMS Yamaha team as he started the defence of his British Supersport title.
Both practice days at the Donington Park BSB season opener were blighted with mixed weather, however the sunshine returned on Sunday for a fantastic day of racing.
Tarran had a crash free weekend as he got up to speed on his McAMS Yamaha.
There were lots of fallers in the wet qualifying session so he wasn’t too disappointed to be 9th on the grid while staying upright throughout practice.
In Sunday’s race he moved between second and fifth on pretty much every lap.
But he managed to dig deep on the penultimate lap to get into the lead and stayed there to take the win.
“I was particularly pleased as I set the fastest time on the last lap and took a chunk out of my best ever lap of Donington,” Tarran said.
“My McAMS Yamaha team is superb so I was so happy to win for them and all of my sponsors this early in the season. A big thanks to all.”
His brother Taylor suffered a breakdown on Friday and fast crash while in 4th position in wet practice on Saturday which didn’t help his preparation.
However after setting personal best lap times in the morning warm up he was confident for Sunday’s races.
Due to track conditions, the superbike qualifying was cancelled so grid positions were taken from Friday’s free practice.
Unfortunately, this was when Taylor suffered his breakdown so he had to start from 21st on the grid.
A good start helped him progress through the field to a potential top ten position. It wasn’t to be, as a small mistake on lap 10 saw him crash out uninjured at the Melbourne hairpin.
His strong lap times moved him up to 11th on the grid for race two, and after a great start he was running in 11th position but once again crashed out on lap seven.
“I’ve never crashed so many times in one weekend so I was obviously devastated for the team and all of our sponsors.
“I’m gutted but will do my best to make up for the disaster this weekend. There were still lots of positives to take from Donington so I can’t wait to get back to work at Brands Hatch in two weeks time.”
