John McGuinness 1Lexelle’s John McGuinness secured an excellent second place finish in the feature International Gold Cup in Scarborough over the weekend.

The 21-times TT champion was back with his Valvoline Racing by Padgetts Honda team and made sure it was a successful reunion as he picked up three top-four finishes on the Superstock Fireblade around the tricky woodland circuit.

It was McGuinness’ first race on the modern machinery since the Senior TT in June and the Morecambe Missile improved his pace throughout the weekend.

He took a solid third position in Saturday’s superbike race after finding himself back in fifth place at the end of lap one.

A valiant fourth position in Sunday’s second leg of the superbikes, preceded the feature International Gold Cup race in which the Lexelle-sponsored driver finished in second place behind Lincolnshire rider Ivan Lintin.

McGuinness, who broke this wrist earlier this year, told the Morecambe Visitor  that his fitness levels are improving all the time after his injury setback.

“My wrist is getting better all the time but the bottom line is that I’ve done hardly any racing this year and I’m way behind everyone else in terms of fitness and being race sharp,” he said.

“I wanted to be competitive this weekend and although it was tough going to begin with, I’ve quickened my pace with each and every outing.

“I’m happy enough. I gave it a real good go in each race and set my fastest lap of the weekend in the Gold Cup race but there was no stopping Ivan.”

His next outing will be at the Stars at Darley meeting at Darley Moor on 12th October.
