Brands Hatch brings highs and lows for Mackenzie brothers

Taylor Mackenzie brands hatch June 2019

Round 4 of the British Superbike Championship saw Taylor Mackenzie take his first win of the season. But there was little to celebrate for brother Tarran after a serious crash.

In the Superstock 1000 class, both halves of Race 1 were tightly fought, with Taylor Mackenzie, Richard Cooper and Lee Jackson swapping places throughout. In the end, Cooper took first, Jackson second and Mackenzie third. The same three battled it out in the second half and any of them could have crossed the line in first place. Ultimately, Jackson and Cooper swapped places with Mackenzie third again.

It was a different story for Race 2 with Mackenzie and Cooper almost caught by Lewis Rollo. He crashed out with eight laps to go and Mackenzie fought off the challenge from Cooper to finish first, with a time of 26:10.188.

“Getting my first win of the season at one of my favourite tracks felt really sweet,” says Taylor. “The wet conditions were challenging but my Bathams BMW felt great so I got my head down and just counted down the laps.

I’m up to second in the championship now and with eight rounds remaining so anything can happen. We improved the bike further at the weekend so the team is buzzing for the next round at Knockhill.”

The weekend started well for Tarran until a crash on the final corner in qualifying. He suffered a concussion which meant he was unable to compete the following day. Data showed he was going at 100mph when he crashed so was lucky not to have any other serious injuries.

“I was absolutely devastated not being able to race on Sunday after crashing in qualifying,” he said afterwards. “I was pushing hard as usual but was surprised when I went down. Once again I had strong podium pace all weekend so unfortunately lost good championship points. I’m lucky though as my injuries could have been a lot worse so I now must focus on getting as fit as possible for Knockhill in two weeks time. Apologies go out to the MCAMS Yamaha team and all my sponsors for this blip in what has been a great season for me so far.”
