Terrific result for Alex Lowes at World SBK Laguna Seca

World SBK Laguna Seca

Podium spot for Lowes in Race 1

Following his win at Brno, Lexelle-sponsored Lowes ended a run of poor results at the Laguna Seca track for the Pata Yamaha team with a superb third place in Race 1.

Fifth on the grid, he had a good start and after some excellent overtakes, kept a consistent pace and moved up to third place in lap nine. Opening up a three second lead over the riders behind, he maintained third all the way to the line.

Lowes commented afterwards: “I am really, really happy! The race itself wasn’t fantastic, the second part was quite boring as I needed to carefully manage my position, but I was really strong at the start and that allowed me to get the podium. To get a podium at Laguna on the Yamaha is beyond what I expected so I think we can be happy with the job we have done as a team.”

Lowes started Race 2 seventh on the grid and had moved up to fifth place by lap 5. By lap 10 he was in a battle for fourth with teammate Michael van der Mark, finally passing him in a sensational move in lap 23. Too late for an attack on third place, Lowes crossed the line fourth to round off a terrific weekend.

Speaking afterwards, Lowes said, “The race was good! It was fantastic to have another battle with Michael. Fair play to him because he has had a more difficult weekend but he turned it around in Race 2 to have a really strong pace, which was really nice to see. I actually felt really good in the race, I just didn’t get the best start. I tried to be a bit aggressive and struggled a bit at the start but I managed to pass a few guys, keep my pace really strong, and I think if I had just managed to get past Michael six or seven laps earlier, maybe I could have challenged for the podium. I think my pace was good enough, which is a compliment to my guys on this track, so a massive thank you to them. A third and a fourth is a good job and I look forward to trying to close the gap to Johnny and Kawasaki in the next race!”

Lowes is now 5th in the standings, on 183 points.
