Tarran Mackenzie eased to Monster Energy Motorstar victory at Brands Hatch on Sunday.

The youngster, who is one of four star riders being sponsored by Lexelle Limited this season, secured a winning start to the season for Redline KTM with an impressive performance.

Tarran qualified on pole, set the fastest lap and was never passed on his way to victory.

More remarkable for the youngest son of former MotoGP rider and British Superbike champion, Niall, is that ‘Taz’ only received his production version of KTM’s Moto3 machine, the RC 250 R last month.

Tarran, 17, who had only ever raced two-stroke machinery before yesterday’s event, has made the transition to the four-stroke 250cc machine incredibly easily and will also race a similar machine in the Red Bull Rookies Cup.

Having qualified on pole position for his fourth season in the class that combines 125cc Grand Prix two-strokes and 250cc Moto3 four-strokes, Taz led the first run of the race before a multi-rider accident meant a restart.

Making another perfect start, Tarran was chased down every lap by Joe Francis but never troubled as he crossed the line for his first ever victory and championship lead.

After the race, Tarran said: “I’ve just been wanting to get the first round over and done with. But to have a weekend like this is unbelievable. I’ve never ever led a race and I could hear Joe’s bike behind me the whole time. I thought I’d be more nervous in that position but managed to keep a cool head. Coming down pit lane and seeing my Dad, Mum and brother Taylor along with the team was such a fantastic feeling. I can’t wait for Thruxton!”

Niall Mackenzie said: “What a fantastic weekend – I’m chuffed to bits. We’ve worked very hard on this project since October last year, so thank you to everyone who helped us put this together. We’ve learned a lot about the bike this weekend so we will only be stronger at Thruxton for the next round.”

Taking the final step on the podium was Joe Irving, also riding a KTM RC 250 R.

Round Two of the Motostar British Championship takes place at Thruxton on 14 April.
