After having his best round to date in the British Talent Cup at Donington, Daniel was back again for the penultimate round of the season, just over the North Sea at Assen, Netherlands.
The first of two free practice sessions got underway, with Daniel's main aim of the session being to learn the track, having never raced there before. However, a red flag early on caused disruption to the session and a broken visor in the second part meant Daniel only completed 9 laps, coming in with a time of 1:56.165.
The second and last free practice session was much better for Daniel, and with no disruptions, he was able to get more to grips with the track. With 12 laps completed, Daniel managed to improve his previous best time by almost 3 seconds, coming in with a 1:53.389.
Qualifying got underway on Saturday morning with Daniel showing promise throughout the session. Daniel set his best time of the round so far on lap 4 of the session with a 1:51.657. He ended the session with this time as his best, which placed him 21st on the grid for race 1.
After a short break, race 1 got underway. Daniel managed to launch off the line fast but made slight contact with another rider in turn 1. A few laps into the race, Daniel managed to get himself into a pack of riders chasing those scoring positions. However, a slight mistake meant Daniel nearly came off his bike and dropped away from that chasing pack. It took most of the race to get back with the same pack, and I managed to get in 19th down the final stretch of the penultimate lap. However, the race was red-flagged due to rain, and unfortunately, the ruling is that they take it back a lap, meaning Daniel finishes in 20th.
Race 2 got underway on Sunday, with the rain causing chaos in terms of bike set-up. Daniel and his team decided to go against slick tyres for the race as the conditions didn't quite match up. Daniel still managed to power through, but partway through the race, his visor steamed up, meaning he had very limited visibility for the remainder of the race. He managed to cross the line in 19th.
This is what Daniel had to say on his round at Assen:
"No points this round, but no crash damage either. Plenty to build on heading into the final round at Oulton Park".
As Daniel said, we'll next see him in the final round of the season at Oulton Park in a few weeks' time.
