It was round two for Rhys over the weekend at Donington Park in the Pirelli National Sportbike Championship.

The weekend started off with two practice sessions, where despite some bike issues, Rhys managed to post some good times as well as coming fourth and ninth in both sessions. After the practice sessions came the qualifying laps where Rhys managed to finish in seventh, just over a second behind the leader.

Race one started well for Rhys as he maintained his position in the pack early on. After a few crashes later on in the race to a few riders in front, Rhys managed to take advantage and propel himself in sixth, which is where he ended up finishing.

Rhys got off to a quick start in race two, managing to go from his starting position of twelfth and into a chasing pack for seventh. Rhys managed to get in front of the chasing pack and maintained seventh for the rest of the race.

These finishes for Rhys boosted him up the championship standings up to sixth and in touching distance of the top five.

This what Rhys had to say on race one: “Race one on Saturday afternoon was again pretty warm, starting in P7 I managed a decent start but dropping back a place, I held onto the group in front for a while and with a few crashes ahead of me I was up into P6, I was struggling with some changes we had made to the bike my pace didn’t improve and the pack I was running with pulled away from me, I managed to finish in P6”.

Rhys then had this to say on race 2: “Race two on Sunday morning I felt really nervous, we had made even more changes to the bike since race one and I was starting back P12 due to my lack of pace in race one. It turned out to be a decent race for me, I made a few places on the first laps and got away with a group for 7th, pushing my way to the front of that group I managed to control the gap behind as I knew the next riders were too far ahead to catch before the end of the race, I finished race two in 7th place”.

Next up for Rhys is round three of the Pirelli National Sportbike Championship at Knockhill on the 14th – 16th of June.
